The best dressed and most talented people live in Fourways – no surprises there – but did you know that we have a designer creating the most gorgeous clothes, right in our hood? We chatted with Kendi Sapepa, the creative force behind Barbara McKenzie designs, about what makes her tick.
Tell us about your brand.
My clothing began as a hobby. I could not find the clothing I wanted in regular stores, so I started making clothes. When people started asking for clothing for themselves, it was a natural step to turn it into a business.
My clothing is locally and handmade. The designs are elegant, simple and timeless, that take you from season to season, for various occasions. It’s a premium look that doesn’t break the bank. I also do bespoke outfits.
What is the inspiration behind your designs?
I get inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. My style is very simple and classic so I look at people and styles and ask myself, ‘How could I make this in a way that would not make this item out of fashion in two years to come?’
What are the trends for this winter? Is there a single “must-have” item?
I think times are moving away from seasonal clothing – with our economy, there has been a move to clothes that give us more wear and value for our money. Of course you won’t be able to wear a strappy top in winter, but you can layer items to stay warm. I wear my Eva dress with strappy heels in summer, and style it with stockings, boots and a sleeveless jacket or chunky scarf in winter.
What’s your favourite thing about Fourways?
I love how everything is so central for me – having Fourways Mall, Cedar Square and the Design Quarter all so close to each other is the best thing!
