We’re super excited that a brand new planet-friendly store, The Refillery, is opening at Cedar Square on 15 March! We’re all about being good earth-dwellers, so we are very excited to get shopping, eco-warrior style. As they say, there is no planet B.

Bring your own
The Refillery is basically a shop where you can stock up on your pantry essentials, like rice, tea, coffee, beans, pasta, spices and snacks, but instead of taking it home in a plastic container or bag, you scoop the amount you want into your own glass jars. If you are just starting out, you can buy jars from the store, or use their recycled paper bags. They don’t mind if you bring your own plastic container – the goal is to get rid of single-use plastic. Simple, easy and kind to the planet.

Oh, 95% of their products are locally sourced, and 75% of them are organic. So it’s good stuff.

But I don’t want to be a hippy!
One of our favourite things about The Refillery is that it’s not about a radical lifestyle shift. You don’t need to go entirely off the grid and make your own toothpaste out of bicarb and potato peels to do your part. If we all make a few small changes, it adds up to a big difference. You don’t even have to give up your little luxuries. Try the 100% biodegradable Nespresso compatible coffee pods. Within 90 days of you enjoying your coffee, your pod will have completely disintegrated!

(Btw, you can get eco-friendly toothpaste powder from The Refillery. It comes in a snappy little tin. Please do not start rubbing potato peels on your teeth. We totally made that up.)

It all adds up
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again (to remind ourselves): our daily choices have consequences that add up over time. So what can we do on a regular basis that is friendly to the only home we have – planet earth?

  • Invest in a sassy water bottle that you’ll want to carry around with you. While you’re at it, get a reusable shopping tote.
  • Make small switches, like using a beeswax wrap instead of cling film. (This is fabric that is treated with wax. You mould it over bowls for lids or wrap your sandwiches in it, then rinse clean.)
  • Find out where to take your recyclables in your neighbourhood.
  • Support businesses that are committed to the environment, like The Refillery!
