If you can dream it…
Robot or racecar? Spaceship or smiley face? When it comes to EverBlock, the only limit is the imagination. It’s perfect for getting the kids’ creative juices going and for them to experience a world of possibilities while learning maths, engineering and technology skills.

Play play
The crafty people at EverBlock used their own blocks to build the playroom. They’ve set up a ball pit and made sections where little ones can chill on inflatables or put together and play with smaller toys. So much to do!

To take home
While the plastic EverBlocks live in the store, children can make their own from cardboard, decorate it themselves and take it home for keeps. We’re decorating ours with unicorns!

Salads that don’t suck

Get the 411 Everything Fourways Salad recipes

Can we be honest for a minute? We know we’re supposed to eat salads but sometimes they are just a little… well… sucky. Too much limp lettuce, sad tomatoes, dressing that tastes like it’s been in the fridge just a week too long. And then you’re still hungry afterwards. There’s a lot that can go wrong with chopped up veggies. So we went searching for some out-of-the-bowl salads that definitely do not suck. The interwebs did not let us down.

Hey sweetie
Roasted sweet potatoes are balanced out with salty parma ham and parmesan cheese in this Grilled Sweet Potato Salad from Tablespoon Kitchens. There’s a bit of a kick from chili flakes and a crunch from kale. (And if you are a kale hater, choose another lettuce. Rocket would be great.)

Herby heaven
This Green Goddess salad by Heather Christo is like a spring garden coming to life. It’s an explosion of fresh peas, radishes, edamame beans, avo and salad leaves topped with a tangy dressing of mustard and rice vinegar. Heaven!

Your new favourite
This roasted plum, kale and ricotta salad by the wizards at Bon Appetit only has three main ingredients, but they are the perfect marriage of soft and crunchy, savory and sweet. For a twist, try roasting nectarines and using soft goat cheese.

The taste of summer
For a summer lunch, look no further than a salmon, asparagus and orzo salad. The rice-shaped pasta (called risoni in this recipe from The Brick Kitchen) is a lovely complement to the fresh salmon and asparagus flavours, and won’t leave you hungry afterwards.

Make the most out of Black Friday

Get the 411 Everything Fourways Black Friday

What started out as an American shopping frenzy has now become part of the South African calendar: Black Friday. It’s on 23 November this year, and you can look forward to loads of great deals. We’ve got some tips to make the most of this celebration of shopping.

Make a plan
It doesn’t matter what you’re buying: The golden rule of shopping is “always make a list”. This is especially helpful if you are starting your December shopping now. You can pick up awesome deals on all the items you’ll need for the holidays, like fun presents, gorgeous outfits for all the parties, and the boring but essential things like tin foil and rice. Think carefully about your shopping list now and December will get much easier.

Respect your piggie
With all the giddy excitement of shiny things on sale, it’s easy to lose your head and blow the budget. (No judgement – we’ve been there.) Some of us will be paid on Black Friday this year, but while it might seem lucky, remember that December is still coming and it tends to be expensive. Set your budget and stick to it. If you don’t trust yourself, take cash and leave the cards at home.

Stay happy
Shopping is a lot like gym. It burns calories, gives you an endorphin rush, and you need similar equipment. Sort of. Ditch the dumbbells, but make sure you are wearing comfy shoes and bring your water bottle. OK, if you really want to, you can wear ankle weights. And when it’s all finished, we give ourselves a reward, like a glass of wine or an ice cream.

Be kind
We’ve all seen the videos – mobs of shoppers crazily trampling each other to get the last TV or gadget on the shelf. Those incidents are usually in the States, but in Fourways, we’re into creating the community we want to live in and being kind to our neighbours. So be a decent person. Smile, be polite and enjoy the shopping!

We’ll see you at Fourways Mall for Black Friday fun!

How I learned to stop stressing and love massage

Get the 411 Everything Fourways Matis massage

Whenever I tell people that I don’t like getting massages, they look at my like I’m crazy. “But it’s so relaxing,” they say. “I could go for a massage every day!” Last week, all of that changed. I was stressed out about everything – my shoulders were practically touching my ears I was so uptight. My colleague told me that Matis at Fourways Mall is running a special on massages – 40% off – and that I should go. Chamomile tea wasn’t cutting it anymore, so I made an appointment.

A promising start
Arriving at the spa, I was given a warm welcome by Laurien, the spa manager. She offered me juice and then introduced me to Annelie, my therapist for the hour. Annelie was not at all phased when I told her of my strange situation: that I wasn’t looking forward to being massaged, but I was there anyway. She immediately put me at ease, asking me what kind of pressure I wanted, to tell her if she was pressing too hard and what she would be massaging (neck, back, legs, feet, arms, hands, decolletage and pressure points in my face and head).

I’ve been missing out!
Within five minutes, I could feel the tension melting from my shoulders, and by the end of the hour, you could have scooped me off the floor I was so relaxed – for the first time in a week. I felt like I’d just woken up from the world’s best cat nap. (I can’t say for sure if I stayed awake for the whole hour.)

Jars of heaven
Matis is a French brand that uses scientific research to develop products to address a variety of skincare concerns. Annelie explained to me that it can take up to a year to create a new product. There are ranges for all skin types, and you can mix and match them for your perfect fit. The experts at Matis Fourways can guide you on that one.

Besties
It’s not just massages on offer at Matis. There’s a full body-care treatment menu, with manis, pedis, waxing, facials, and microblading. Join their loyalty programme and you’ll get 1% of your treatment value added to your card, which you can spend on our pampering and products on your next visit. Which in my case will be soon!

Get 40% off massages at Matis Fourways Mondays to Thursdays till the end of November!

This great special means it’s just R330 for an hour of relaxation! Book on their website or call 011 465 6151/2 and treat yourself.

Add some local flavour to your festive decor

Get the 411 Everything Fourways Christmas decor

It’s that time of the year where everything is wrapping up (work deadlines and presents) and the long holidays are beckoning. We’re looking forward to lazy summer days, watermelon, icy cocktails, and laughing with friends and family. And while we love twinkly lights, spiced wine and snowscapes, they don’t really fit in with December in South Africa. That’s when we turned to Pinterest for some locally inspired festive decorations. Warning: they are lovely!

Fat and happy
Succulents are irresistible. They have fat, juicy leaves and thrive much no matter how much you neglect them. Imagine welcoming friends and family into your home with a gorgeous green wreath on your front door!

Put your presents here
The succulent wreath will take a little talent (or a florist) and if that’s a bit higher grade for you (no judgement) dress up an indigenous plant as your tree. Use a potted aloe, cactus or South African plant instead of the Northern Hemisphere pine tree – you gotta have something to put the presents under.

Dress it up
Like all of us in the mornings, festive trees need dressing. Snowflakes and reindeer decorations can be enchanting, but locally-inspired prints and patterns on your baubles will take your decor game to the next level. Keep an eye out at markets, or buy some plain decorations and paint them with the kids.

Cutie booties
Fur linings will get you a bit sweaty in the middle of December, so go for shweshwe. The kids will love exploring the surprises these bright stockings have in store for them. You can make a pattern for these and stitch them up yourself, or you might spot some at a market.

Happy decorating!

Oh so pretty
Beauty Swop or Sale – the website where you can get the scoop on all things cosmetics – is hosting Beauty Expo Johannesburg 2018 on 17 November. It’s an all-day make-up extravaganza, with masterclasses, prizes, and international brands for sale, like Kurlz and Kutz SA, OFRA Cosmetics, Smudge, Kactus and Kream, Kikkaboo, Intrinsicurly Me, Mii Cosmetics, and many more. It’s at the Forest Road Design and Decor Centre, behind Pineslopes.

Take a trip to East Africa
At the East Africa Market this weekend you can get an authentic taste of the food, culture, clothing, decor, music and jewellery of the east. Come with the family to relax, meet new people and even jump with the Maasai. It’s on 17 November at the Stables Village Centre in Chartwell from 9am. Tickets are R30 and kids get in free.

Summer love
A party dedicated to summer is our kind of jol. Take a drive out to Toadbury Hall on Saturday and soak up the fun at We Love Summer’s Secret Garden. It’s a whole day of sunshine, music, food, drinks, dancing and relaxing. The party is for over 21s only and there are shuttle services available from Sandton Sports Club

On yer bikes
It’s that weekend again, when fit (hopefully) cyclists get on their bikes and zoom around the city. Yes, it’s the Telkom 974 Cycle Challenge on Sunday 18 November. This year the route is backwards, so the brave pedallers will start in Lonehill, head down Steyn City Boulevard and along Cedar Avenue – cheer them on if you see them. Feeling suddenly fit and motivated? There are a few entries remaining; you need to go to the Ticketpro Dome on Thursday 08:30 to 18:00, Friday 08:30 to 19:00, or Saturday 08:30 to 13:00. If you are driving somewhere, check out their interactive map so you don’t get stymied by road closures. Good luck!

Put your nose where it belongs: in a book

Get the 411 Everything Fourways Local books

Our much-deserved time off is just around the corner, so we decided to make the most of the holiday by lining up some books. These four local reads make great to-me-from-me presents, and will delight the book worms in your life when they find them in their stockings.

Local lit
You might have seen the movie, but the book Happiness is a Four Letter Word, by Cynthia Jele, is different enough that you should still read it: it has a fourth main character. Described as a local Sex and the City, with the main character living in Fourways, lovers of chick lit need to read this story about four amazing women. Nandi’s about to get married but her ex suddenly reappears on the scene. Zaza is trying to keep her rich husband so that she doesn’t have to go back home. Tumi meets a stranger who says Tumi’s husband is the father of her child. Princess falls for Theo, but when she gets pregnant, he disappears with half of what she owns. Read it already!

Too yummy
Zola Nene is back with a host of recipes that are simple to make, yet deeply satisfying for both the stomach and the soul. Dip into Simply Zola and treat yourself to barley, grape and pecan nut salad; prawn, lemon and chilli linguine; cola-braised beef short ribs; and rocky road waffles with salted caramel sauce. There’s also a whole section of recipes for one, like this microwave coffee and chocolate cake.

Road trip
Journey around South Africa with Sihle Khumalo as he drives from the top to the bottom of the country. On his journey through teeny dorps, big cities and everything in between, he encounters all types of locals – from security guards to activists, drunks, politicians and religious leaders. Rainbow Nation My Zulu Arse is an enlightening and entertaining book about finding the warmth in people, even in the strangest situations.

Explore the city
People who are interested in history will love Johannesburg Then and Now by Marc Latilla. It’s a photo-rich book that shows how our city has grown from a little mining town to one of the biggest economic hubs on the continent. Many of the pictures were taken from the same views so readers can exactly what’s changed. The archival images date back to 1880. This is a fascinating look back in time.

Fill your bookcase
Our favourite place to fulfil our bookish needs is Estoril Books at Fourways Mall. Browse the shelves to stumble on your next read or ask the friendly staff to order what you’re after.
